The Four Tarot Suits
The 56 Minor Arcana cards are divided into four suits, each describing a different field of everyday experience. Wands correspond to Fire and show initiative, desire, creativity, ambition, and action. Cups correspond to Water and explore emotion, relationships, intuition, imagination, and connection. Swords correspond to Air and address thought, communication, truth, decisions, and conflict. Pentacles correspond to Earth and focus on work, money, health, home, resources, and practical stability.
Each suit contains 14 cards: Ace through Ten, followed by Page, Knight, Queen, and King. The suit identifies the main life area, while the number or court rank shows how its energy is developing. No suit is entirely positive or negative. Each includes constructive expressions, challenges, and choices that require context.
Ace Through Ten
The numbered Minor Arcana cards follow a loose progression from seed to completion. Each number marks a stage that repeats across all four suits, which is why learning the numbers unlocks forty cards at once.

Understanding Court Cards
The Page, Knight, Queen, and King describe ways of learning, pursuing, embodying, and directing a suit. Pages are curious and receptive, Knights put energy into motion, Queens develop inward mastery and sustained presence, and Kings apply mature direction and responsibility. Their expression changes with the suit: a Knight of Cups moves through feeling differently from a Knight of Swords moving through ideas.
Court cards can represent a person, a role in the situation, a behavior to adopt, or a stage of development. They should not be assigned rigidly by gender, age, or appearance. Context shows whether the card describes you, someone else, or a quality shaping the reading.
Combining Number and Suit
A practical way to read the Minor Arcana is to combine domain and stage. Start with the suit to identify the field: action, emotion, thought, or material life. Then use the number or court rank to describe what is beginning, developing, challenged, mastered, or completed.
Finally, check the image, orientation, spread position, and surrounding cards. This process gives a flexible interpretation without forcing every card into one memorized keyword. Reversed cards may show blocked, delayed, excessive, or inwardly directed energy rather than a simple opposite meaning, alongside the reader's practical judgment.
When a Reading Is Mostly Minor Arcana
A spread dominated by Minor Arcana cards usually points to everyday, workable territory. The question is being shaped by daily choices, conversations, habits, and circumstances rather than a single defining turning point, which also means there is more room to act on what the cards describe.
When three or more cards share one suit, read the element before the individual cards. Many Cups place the heart at the center, many Swords show the mind working overtime, many Wands raise the pace and pressure, and many Pentacles ground the question in money, work, or health.
The missing suit can matter as much as the dominant one. If a relationship question draws no Cups, the real issue may sit in communication, pace, or practical logistics instead of feeling. Treat dominance and absence as a first summary of the spread, then return to each card for detail.
Why Minor Arcana Cards Look the Way They Do
For centuries, the numbered Minor Arcana were plain pip cards: the Seven of Swords showed seven swords arranged on the card, with no scene to interpret. Readers worked from the meaning of the number and the element alone, much like reading modern playing cards.
The Rider-Waite-Smith deck of 1909, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, changed that by giving every numbered card a full pictorial scene, such as the mourning figure over spilled cups on the Five of Cups.
